4 Reasons to Spend a Sunny Day in Detroit at Belle Isle

Belle Isle Park is a Michigan State Park, known as Belle Isle, in Detroit, Michigan. This island in the Detroit River is rich with history, natural beauty, and family fun. Discover the 4 reasons you should spend the next sunny day in Detroit at Belle Isle.

1. The beach with a view
Belle Isle Beach has great views of the Detroit skyline on a clear day. The beach area and parking area aren’t the largest; I’ve had the most success getting to the beach between 9 – 9:30 a.m. On a hot day, you’ll find the parking lot blocked off by 11 a.m. due to high traffic.

Pack your beach bag, get your Michigan State Park Recreation Passport, and enjoy the warm weather with your family, partner, or friends.

2. The Aquarium
The Belle Isle Aquarium is a public, free attraction. The Aquarium does accept donations at a recommended rate of $5 per person. Designed to feel like you’re underwater while inside, it was the oldest, continually operating public aquarium in North America when it closed on April 3, 2005.

The Aquarium is a perfect addition to a family day spent on Belle Isle.

3. Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory
The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is a greenhouse and botanical garden on Belle Isle. It’s one of the oldest continually running conservatories in the United States. The conservatory is also free, but accepts donations. I highly recommend if you have a succulent lover in your life; the Cactus House is captivating.

Who knows? If you love the conservatory enough, maybe you’ll choose to hold your wedding ceremony in the glass house.

4. The Outdoor Sports / Activities
There are truly too many attractions on Belle Isle to speak to in this blog. The isle is perfect for almost anything you could think of such as the following: biking, hiking, a round of golf, playing tennis, holding a family reunion, admiring architecture (like the James Scott Memorial Fountain), and even enjoying local food trucks.
